ASICS Women’s Accelerate Jacket Review

We try out this versatile winter jacket

ASICS Women's Accelerate Jacket

Part of ASICS’ 360-degree protection collection, the ASICS Women’s Accelerate jacket is a versatile and bright piece that will see you through just about any British winter weather.

A key feature to look out for in winter running jackets is waterproofing. While it’s not too hard to find fully waterproof fabric, many jackets are labeled ‘water resistant’ because seams and zips aren’t sealed – and those are the weak spots where rain will get in – this one does have taped seams as well as a sealed and backed front zip. That means that it’d take a really sustained downpour to get wet in this – unfortunately our test period was showery and drizzly, rather than full-on rain and gales, but we’re pretty confident in this jacket’s capabilities.

The ASICS Women’s Accelerate really excels in comfort, particularly for this type of jacket. Soft, fleecey material inside the collar keeps you feeling cosy as you head out and a nice and unusual touch is that the pockets are lined with the same material. Of course, no one runs with their hands in their pockets, but it’s a nice psychological boost if you’re standing around waiting for a training partner or just on your way home from the gym. There are soft inserted cuffs with thumbholes to keep your hands a bit warmer, too, although our tester did find these a little bit restrictive so if you have long limbs you’ll want to try before you buy. In addition to the two generous side pockets, there’s a well-placed chest pocket that fits an iPhone snugly, and it has a hole for your earphones wire.

It’s quite fitted, but we felt it could do with a bit more shaping around the waist – that’s just a matter of taste, though. On the run it offers good freedom of movement and coverage. It’s very light, especially considering the degree of warmth and rain protection on offer, but if you’re wearing short sleeves you will notice a bit of moisture build-up on the main fabric as you sweat – something you’d expect in any fully waterproof jacket. It’s not the cheapest jacket you’ll find but, for the degree of protection here, we think it represents really good value.
