Hoka One One Hupana Women’s Shoe Review

We test a low-profile, everyday shoe from Hoka One One

Hoka One One Women's

Hoka fans who feel a bit self-conscious in the brand’s trademark high-sided soles will welcome this lower profile shoe. The Hoka One One Hupana women’s shoe is a good-looking, responsive and light everyday trainer.

It features the brand’s first knitted upper – runners familiar with Nike Flyknit will be used to this style. It makes for a great fit, excellent breathability (overlays are limited to one small printed detail on the toe) and – importantly for this shoe – a more subtle aesthetic than some other Hoka One One styles. Hoka says this shoe is good to wear all day – it’s clearly been designed with gym-to-school-run wearers in mind and we were happy to wear it around town after test runs.

The weight of the Hoka One One Hupana women’s shoe is lower than most everyday Hoka trainers, thanks to the RMAT cushioning and that lower profile sole – there’s just less material here than in (for example) the brand’s Clayton 2. That means that, when you go for your first run in the Hupana, they feel really easy to run in. Don’t mistake them for a speedwork shoe though – the fairly flat shape of the outsole doesn’t feel super-fast and the traction, though absolutely fine, didn’t have that claw-like grip you would expect in a racing or fast training shoe.

While the RMAT cushioning is bouncy and responsive, you’re pretty low to the ground in this shoe so it’s not super-plush and definitely more suited to neutral runners. Plenty of padding in the heel also makes it suitable for heel-strikers.

You’ll notice that the profile is lower overall than something like the Clifton or the Clayton, and it doesn’t have that distinctive rocker shape you’ll see in other Hoka One One shoes – overall it’s a more traditional trainer.

This is a decent everyday trainer for neutral runners – it’s not the most fancy shoe on the market but it looks and feels great, and you can wear it on your run, to the shops and everything in-between.
