There are so many ways to monitor and review your runs these days that deciding what your priorities are, and how to spend your budget, can be tricky. The TomTom Adventurer sits towards the advanced end of the pack in terms of features, but it’s not as complex (or as pricey) as some of the GPS super-computers available now. It’s perfect for someone making a step up from an entry-level heart-rate and GPS monitor to something with a few more bells and whistles.
The TomTom Adventurer has plenty going for it, on paper. Features include GPS tracking, built-in heart-rate monitor, activity and sleep tracking, audio performance feedback, heart-rate training zones, and bread-crumbing. Race mode is great, giving updates of previous efforts on a route, so you can compare them to your current fitness. The music player allows you to store over 500 songs (3GB), so you can leave a smartphone or MP3 player at home and listen to Roxette’s greatest hits via wireless earphones. A single, four-way button is more user friendly than most and the battery lasts four to five days (up to 20 hours in GPS mode).
That’s the good stuff. The average stuff is that it doesn’t receive smart notifications (arguably no biggie), while the display is comparatively basic, as is the app and activity tracking data.
The less impressive stuff is that it’s plasticky and, if we’re being a tiny bit mean, light and cheap-feeling – compared with its contemporaries. And it’s colourful in a way that makes you think twice about wearing it to work (though an all-black version is also available). But then again, as so many top-end watches now feel too fancy to take running for fear of a scratch, that’s kind of refreshing. Kind of.
