If you’ve ever dabbled in triathlon or cycling, you’re likely to be familiar with dhb – the exclusive apparel brand of online sports retailer Wiggle. Its range is high quality yet affordable, catering for almost all budgets and levels of athletic ability.
At WR, we were delighted to hear that dhb had decided to turn its attention towards its running range, by upgrading its previously brief collection with new pieces for AW16. Like its tri range, the new collection offers well-designed and highly technical kit for women at great value. We tried out three pieces – here’s what we thought.
dhb Women’s Long Sleeve Winter 1/4 Zip Top
Dhb promises warmth and comfort with this mid-layer and it didn’t disappoint. The fabric feels luxuriously soft on the skin and the fabric is plush enough to keep you cosy. We loved that the fabric wasn’t remotely clingy either, and our testers found the fit and cut particularly flattering in comparison to other mid- and base-layers, which often come up too short. The quarter length zip is a nice touch, adding extra ventilation when needed. While the top is finished with Polygiene® anti-bacterial treatment to keep the garment fresher for longer, we didn’t find this particularly effective and, after a 45-minute test run, the top was definitely not odour-free!
dhb Women’s Tech Run Tight
As predicted, we had no complaints with these tights. Like dhb’s cycling tights, which to seem to retain their quality year after year, these tights had the same durable feel. The compressive fabric offers support and protection, potentially reducing muscle oscillation (depending on how much of a cynic you are on this matter), yet doesn’t feel overly restrictive. The wide integrated waistband feels particularly comfortable, and features a drawcord so you can adjust to fit. We were big fans of the rear zip pocket, which is big enough to put your phone and keys! While pretty plain in their look and style, at £28 you’d struggle to get a better quality pair of tights at this price.
dhb Women’s Lightweight Packable Run Jacket
This jacket is ideal for autumn running. You can throw it on over a t-shirt on a cold morning run and it will give you just enough protection to shield you from the wind, yet is light enough to pack down into your pocket if you get too warm. That said, pair it with Capris pants or shorts and it’s unlikely you’ll overheat; it has under arm panels, made from polyester mesh, which adds a welcome draft and, at only 120g, you can’t really feel it’s on. Our favourite bits? We loved the addition of thumb loops which added extra coziness – particularly useful at this time of year when it’s not quite cold enough to wear gloves – and also the subtle reflective detailing, which added more visibility than we expected in low light. If you want something that’s fully waterproof though, this jacket isn’t your best bet (you’re likely to get pretty sodden if there’s a decent downpour!). We’d also recommend going up a size, as we did find it came up quite small and was a little shorter in length than we’d have liked. Like the tights though, at £28, it’s not going to pull at your purse strings and, in our opinion, is a steal!
