Jennifer Stein, a grandmother from Cornwall, is set to run the Virgin Money London Marathon on Sunday 28 April 2019 to raise vital funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity (GOSH Charity), the charity that supports her 20 month old granddaughter, Emilia.
Emilia was admitted to Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) at just a year old suffering with seizures. Her seizures were a result of cortical dysplasia, where part of the brain has not developed properly. GOSH reports that at one point, Emilia was experiencing up to 50 seizures a day.
“I remember once when holding her she suddenly nose-dived down. At first I thought she was playing games. But no, it was the start of a very hard 6 months for her, and for her family. And there were no smiles.” – Jennifer
Emilia underwent a serious brain operation, a hemispherotomy. This disconnects the cortex (or outer layer) of one half of the brain from the other without removing it. Since this life-saving operation Emilia has not had a seizure and is on the road to recovery. She is even able to attend full-time nursery.
Jennifer hopes by taking on the 26.2 mile challenge that she can raise vital funds for the GOSH Charity to support other seriously ill children like Emilia. Jennifer has also expressed how she found running to be therapeutic during this tough time.
“It was a very traumatic event. I was in the hospital quite a lot because we would try as grandparents to be supportive and take it in turns to visit. Running has really helped me to deal with that stress, and the fact that I can raise money for GOSH Charity at the same time is wonderful.”
All the money raised from running in the Virgin Money London Marathon will go towards the hospital’s most urgent needs. Laura Savory, Head of Community Fundraising at Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity, said:
“We’re really grateful to Jennifer and all our supporters for taking part in this fantastic challenge. With their help we can make a real difference for to the lives of seriously ill children from across the UK.”
